Check the fuel system - if the build up of soot is excessive in the intake manifold- this could be a sign of problems with the fuel system - check the air mass sensor, EGR, injection, or possible oil consumption from the engine. Check the DPF or catalyst for clogging. Check manifold and exhaust for tightness.
